Week 7: Sodium and Sugar
Here is an overview of what will be covered in this class:
Many foods contain sources of sodium and sugar, especially those consumed in the typical American diet. There is no doubt that sodium and sugar improve the taste and enjoyment of what we eat. Sodium enhances sweeter flavors and blocks bitter ones. And sugar! When it comes in contact with taste buds on our tongue, not only does it taste good, the signal sent to the brain rewards us for eating it.
In moderation, both of these can be part of a healthy diet. However, when too much is eaten – or added to foods – they can lead to or worsen health issues. This class will teach you how much is okay to eat and help you to identify where to find the sodium and sugar in your diet. The group will discuss and share tips on selecting foods that reduce the total amount of sodium and sugar consumed.
