There are many things that can positively impact our overall health and wellness – several can be done on our own but some involve the expertise of others. “Complementary treatments” are in addition to our traditional medical plan. They can contribute to the management of diabetes and many other aspects of health and wellness.
Laughter and meditation are two tools we can practice on our own. The group viewed a short comedy sketch.
They also spent time being lead through a meditation exercise. The group then discussed how practicing these skills could help with stress, blood pressure and overall well being.
The discussion then focused on treatments that involved specialized expertise. Massage is one of the fastest growing complementary therapies used in the United States. It reduces muscle tension and induces relaxation.
Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization as effective in treating more than 100 conditions including diabetes. Research confirms that it is safe and indicates that it regulates pancreatic function and insulin levels.
Good dental care and its impact on heart health and diabetes were highlighted. It was stressed that anyone using complementary treatments should let their healthcare team know.
Dedham Health & Athletic Complex offers a monthly Diabetes Forum & Support Group meeting. It is held on the 3rdWednesday of each month from 10:00 – 11: 00 am in the Dedham Health Theater.
