DHAC Assistant Fitness Director
When began my career at Dedham Health and Athletic Complex, part of my job description included the dreaded phrase “You will be teaching group exercise classes.” I thought about this phrase over and over on the way back from my interview. I was petrified. All the group classes I had ever participated in were full of cliques, advanced moves, and instructors who were only happy if they were getting a workout. Regardless of how their classes fared. Nope, I thought. I’m not teaching at DHAC.
This was in October of 2000. If you look at the schedule on our website, you will see I actually do teach quite a few of our group fitness classes. What changed my mind? I knew Dedham Health stood for more. I could be part of something that would change this cliché. Instead of being an overwhelmed student, I could be the instructor who had one goal in mind: Making everyone feel welcome.
And, that is how all of our group exercise instructors teach. When you walk into that room – whether for the first time or the one hundredth – we notice and take the time to make you feel welcome. You will leave that class feeling better than when you walked in.
The next time you come to Dedham Health for a workout, ask yourself if some company might boost your workout. Group fitness has literally changed my life. I will always be an instructor and a participant. It’s medicine that always goes down easily. If you have any questions ahead of time, feel free to ask any one of the group fitness instructors. You can find out who is around by asking at the front desk.
Hope to see you in class!
