It’s the time of year to entertain outdoors and have cookouts! However, sometimes these cookouts can become situations for over-indulging! We want you enjoy the festivities without blowing it, so our Simple Steps holistic health coaches, Rosanne & Christine, have come up with some ideas to keep you on track!
Add extra nutrients to your appetizer tray by using fresh veggies to dip into healthy salsa or a yogurt and dill dip, or even a little guacamole (although it is healthy fat, it’s still high in calories). This is a great substitute for chips or cheese and crackers. If you decide to use corn chips, be sure to buy organic to avoid GMO’s.
Instead of regular beef burgers, substitute bison, turkey or Portobello mushrooms. Or make shish kabobs with lean chicken, beef, or shrimp. If you must have ribs, then make a rub with fresh herbs and spices and avoid the high sugar content of most store bought BBQ sauces.
Substitute pesto for mayonnaise based potato or macaroni salads. Better yet, grill up a platter of a variety of your favorite veggies which can be prepared in advance and served at room temperature.
If you make a green salad, use vinaigrette dressings rather than creamy ranch style dressings. Avoid the low fat salad dressing! These usually have added sugar or chemicals, homemade dressings are quick to make and taste great!
Can’t forget about Memorial Day cocktails! If you want to indulge in an adult beverage, pour yourself a wine spritzer, wine on ice with sparkling water or water infused with fresh fruit for a festive drink with no added sugar. This way you can save those sugar calories for a little bit of dessert!
Don’t deprive yourself of dessert, fill your plate with some fresh fruit alongside a small dollop of whip cream and skip the ice cream sundaes!
