Have you ever driven somewhere, gotten to your destination and not remembered how you got there? What about after finishing your workout at the gym? Have you ever thought to yourself, “What did I even just do?” Ever been in the middle of your workout and KNOW you are giving less than your best effort, yet you don’t make a change? Yes, yes, and um, well… yes.
Let’s be honest, I’m guilty of all three of these things (and more) and I’m sure most of you reading this can relate. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big believer in pushing through that workout even if you cannot give 100% every day because coming to the gym is by far the hardest step.
If you fall into the funk of not being entirely present in your workouts, your results will plateau and head downhill fast. Sometimes you literally need to tell yourself to SNAP OUT OF IT and that’s OKAY! Everyone falls into a funk with fitness, it’s those of us who are able to get out of it that will see the best results – mentally, physically, and emotionally.
I teach in both large and small groups, as well as one-on-one personal training. I can tell you that in all of these settings I am constantly reminding people to “STAY IN YOUR ZONE” and “DON’T ZONE OUT!” As soon as I say that, everyone’s already open eyes seem to open wider and re-focus. You can see it physically too! People start to actually pay attention to the muscles they are using and recruit additional muscles to aid in a full, more effective range of motion. It’s quite remarkable to see and I promise you that if you recognize those zoning out moments and jump back into your zone, it will make an impressive difference in your workout.
The next time you feel yourself zoning out, focus on your breathing and think back to this post! Say it yourself “STAY IN YOUR ZONE, DON’T ZONE OUT!” You’ll feel your eyes open wide and your muscles wake up and those results will be closer than you thought!
