To condition your heart & lungs, that’s why! Train your body to utilize its oxygen more effectively & tolerate internal & external stressors placed upon it!
EXAMINE YOUR GOALS: If your goal is to run a half marathon, then you need to focus on building muscular endurance, as well as the circulatory & respiratory systems. This way your body will know that it has to supply enough blood and oxygen to the muscles required to run the distance.
HOWEVER: If your goal is to sprint, you don’t need to train your aerobic system, but rather your anaerobic (or without oxygen). High intensity blasts of exercise help do the trick!
