Remember when you were a child and bruised your knee then your mother kissed it and made it better?
Question: Why does rubbing a bruised knee, applying pressure to a sore muscle or using a hot or cold pack help reduce pain?
Answer: The nerve root that sends the signal of pain to the brain can be overridden or “inhibited” if a different stimulus (pressure, temperature or vibration) is applied. If you interfere with the flow of pain signals going to the brain, you can experience less pain. A physical therapist may use electrical stimulation to give a buzzing or vibrating feeling to override the sensation of pain.
