Group Fitness Director and DHAC Kenpo Karate Instructor
If you have passed through our lobby during a busy afternoon or on the weekends, you have most likely seen our Kenpo karate students in action. The majority of the spectators comment on how cute the little kids are in their uniforms and belts. But Kenpo isn’t just for kids. It provides great benefits for adult women too.
I started learning a martial art at age 17 when I entered my first kickboxing class. I was hooked immediately. I quickly picked up the sport and eventually began sparring, or fighting others in a controlled manor. A few years later I was taking my first karate lesson. In full uniform I now had to bow into my studio and to my instructors. There was a certain code of conduct that made me feel I was part of something very special. I studied hard for five solid years before testing for my first black belt.
Throughout that time and moving into my schooling as a Kenpoist I have gained confidence in myself without being a tough girl trying to prove herself all the time. Kenpo has really taught me a lot about handling many types of people and their personalities. I am very much aware of my surroundings at all times and my instincts are always right on, keeping me out of trouble.
How can Kenpo benefit you? First, you will be training your body in a different way and will see a fitness benefit. Second, the Kenpo students are like a family. We learn a lot about each other and really enjoy seeing each other succeed. The class is all levels so you are working with students of all ranks which allow you to learn a lot. Third, and most importantly, you will gain confidence and the ability to carry yourself.
I was once given the biggest compliment by a DHAC member. He asked me how tall I was, and I told him 5’3”, he said “Wrong, you carry yourself as if you are 6 feet tall”. I nodded my head and thought to myself, that’s what all of your Kenpo training has accomplished. Well Done!
Interested in learning more? We offer adult Kenpo classes three days a week, and will continue to add more in the future if the interest continues to grow. Try it out for yourself. Please feel free to contact myself or Guy Caracciolo to find out times and answer any questions you may have.
