If your holidays are anything my family’s, then you must be familiar with the “Uncomfortable Unbuckle.” You know exactly what I mean. When you eat so much and hit the point of “I’m so stuffed, I could explode” and you need the extra space in your waistline. So your belt buckle becomes undone. This Uncomfortable Unbuckle is sweeping the nation, starting at your very own dining room table.
Because this feeling of discomfort is very common during the holiday season, it is important to look out for possible warning signs. Some common ones include:
- Piles of food loaded onto your plate
- Devouring food without coming up for air
- Secretly stealing the food off of your neighbor’s plate
- No rest in-between meal courses
Does this sound familiar? Well don’t worry. There are simple ways you can break this bad holiday habit. Just think before you eat and use these simple acts to stay in line:
- Chew more (30-40 times per bite)
- Drink 8oz of water before your meal
- Carry on a conversation at the table
- Do not get overwhelmed by all the food options
- Know your portions
Sometimes your eyes are truly bigger than your stomach. Chewing more will allow your brain to realize how satisfied you are. Drinking water before your meal will fill you up faster, allowing you to eat fewer calories. Carrying on a conversation with a family member will also allow your body to catch up to your eating. And yes, maybe the table is completely covered with food, but that does not mean you have to eat everything that is laid out in front of you.
Eat a variety of foods, but eat in a moderate fashion. New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and you know you still want to fit in that black party dress you’ve been waiting all year to wear. So stay motivated. Don’t change your mindset just because it’s the holiday season. Keep that belt buckle exactly where it is.
