At Dedham Health, we strive to improve the lives of each and every one of our members. We are proud to present Michael’s first person account of his fitness and weight loss journey. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
In early 2010, my health was in serious jeopardy. I was severely overweight, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, venous insufficiency in my right leg and had just been diagnosed with gout.
I knew more problems were just around the corner. I also knew that weight loss surgery wasn’t for me. So I decided to turn things around by taking control. I dropped a good amount of weight through walking and diet., But I knew it wasn’t enough. I needed to take it to the next level. A friend of mine who belonged to Dedham Health suggested the 60/60 Program. I was nervous. I had no idea what I would be able to do at a gym. I envisioned the sorts of trainers you see on those weight-loss shows (yelling and belittling). Nevertheless, I figured I would give it a shot.
July 1, 2010.
That was the day I met with an exercise physiologist (Jason) and got started. Jason created a very workable program. Under the 60/60 program, I only needed to commit to two days a week. Being able to use the facilities as if I was a full-time member was an added bonus. As I went on, I received tons of support from Jason, and other exercise physiologists Dodi and Robbie. They periodically reviewed my workout card and made adjustments as I improved.
At the end of my 60 days, I had dropped 23lbs. The decision was easy for me. I was going to sign on as a regular member. I continue to work with Jason even after I used my free personal training appointments. (Did you know all members get introductory free personal training sessions?) Jason developed a workout plan that built on what I had been doing in 60/60, while presenting new challenges.
I have been a member for over a year and a half and have lost 127lbs in that time. I was able to drop all 3 of my blood pressure medicines and my cholesterol medicine. I am now medicine free.
I have explored many of Dedham Health’s great offerings. I have taken swimming lessons in the family pool. I have participated in a handful of group exercise classes (Hydrocise, Trail Mix, Mat Pilates, Simply Stretch). By far, the best option that I have taken advantage of is the paid personal training. The self-confidence I have gained from my personal training appointments with Jason cannot be measured. He has pulled me out of my comfort zone and has me trying things (like running!) that I wouldn’t have tried if I was left to my own devices.
What’s great about having a fitness staff like the one at Dedham Health, is that there is bound to be someone you connect with. Each of the exercise physiologists excels in different areas and have their own styles.
I am fitter and healthier than I have ever been in my whole life. Thanks, in part to the help and guidance I received from Jason and the rest of the Dedham Health fitness staff, I feel optimistic about committing to a healthier lifestyle.
